On July 30, 2004, as a 20-year-old student at Pacific Lutheran University,
Brad Lubken was diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Within days, he discovered the cancer also invaded his lymph nodes. Tumors were discovered on his hip and on his vena cava. Intensive treatment left Brad in significant pain and he was unable to keep up with his school work.

However, during this period of time he began to focus on ways to use his experience in a positive manner and began to talk to classes in schools. His hope was to inform young people of the realities of cancer in their lives.

Two years later Brad is a true survivor. He looks for opportunities each day help those suffering from cancer.

He believes that his bout with cancer has changed him in every way. He believes that life is meant to be lived to the fullest. His life reflects his outlook.

Last summer, Brad traveled to Austin, Texas to work with the Lance Armstrong Foundation. During his time there, he learned a great deal about fundraising while working with worldwide contacts.

He is using that experience to help co-chair Pacific Lutheran University’s first ever Relay For Life.

Using his experience of Relaying since junior high school, he recognized the vital role that Relay For Life plays in Pierce County and the greater community. He jumped at the chance to bring Relay For Life to PLU.

Working with a team, Brad established a goal of 30 teams with hopes of each team bringing in $1,000. The May 6-7 event already has 51 teams registered!

When asked what it means to be a survivor, Brad responded, “Stay informed and let life be an opportunity to live and grow.” May we all be survivors.
